There is a great similarity between this desk and the example
pictured in "Southern Furniture 1680-1830" by Hurst
& Prown on page 488. The
composition of the veneered top section is very similar. We therefore
are
attributing this desk to Virginia, if not Richmond specifically.
Because of the square tapered legs, however, we date this to
an early period circa 1800. Primary wood is mahogany with figured
mahogany veneer and the writing board is a single solid mahogany
board. The drawers are beautifully made with very fine dovetails.
Most desks of this type are fairly crude while this desk was
made by a competent cabinetmaker, most likely in a Southern urban
center. In excellent original structural condition with only
several minor veneer imperfections, original brass casters, replaced
brasses, old finish. Repolishing if desired included in price.
Dimensions are: H. 61 1/2" W.
31" D. 26"
$ 9500.
