The city of Baltimore produced outstanding Federal furniture
beginning in the 1790's. It was distinguished by exceptional
inlay embellishments as this card table has. But note also the
brilliant design of the carrot-type inlay on the legs. Each front
leg is inlaid on three faces while the rear legs are inlaid on
two faces. This means that if you stand off to a side you may
possibly see 7 inlaid leg faces. In addition the complex band
inlay on the lower edge of the apron along with the light wood
edge inlay of the top and the string inlay on the apron beautifully
set off the overall design of the table. Other typical Baltimore
features are the double rear swing legs, round swing leg hinge
and oak secondary wood. This stunning card table would honor
the finest collection of American Federal furniture.
