A very similar work table in the collection of Winterthur
is pictured on page 239 of "American Furniture, The Federal
Period". Theirs has the later label dated 1823, while ours
is dated 1817. Michael Allison, along with Phyfe and Lannuier,
formed the triumvirate of master cabinetmakers of Federal New
York. Although Allison labeled more pieces than the others, they
rarely turn up for sale. So little American Federal furniture
is labeled that each piece is highly sought after. This work
table has the rare feature of two pull-out slides in the back
which support the desk board. The interior has a writing surface
and a desk section for pens, etc. The label is in the second
drawer down on the left. The medial shelf below is original,
the brass hardware has been replaced. A great addition to any
collection of Federal furniture.
Dimensions are: H. 31 1/2" W.
