THE FINEST MICHAEL ALLISON INLAID HEPPLEWHITE NEW YORK CHEST OF DRAWERS

Although not labeled, there is no doubt that this chest of drawers was made by Michael Allison in New York City circa 1805-1810. The dramatic satinwood inlaid diamonds with floral pictorial inlay on green dyed background is also found on the chest pictured on page 95 of "Federal Furniture at Boscobel" by Berry Tracy. However the overall quality of the case of this example far exceeds that one, the one in the State Department collection and all others that I am aware of. Note especially the line inlay which outlines the apron
and dramatically highlights it and the choice mahogany chosen for the top. The mahogany veneers of the drawers are characteristically the finest available. The stamped eagle brasses are the originals. Dimensions are: height 46 1/4", width 45" and depth 22 5/8". This outstandingly beautiful chest would be appropriate in the finest collection of American Federal furniture.
